Mari is the Japanese word for ball, temari means hand ball. Temari were originally made to play ball games with, and evolved into more and more complex and beautiful designs. Traditionally temari balls were gifted to children on New Year’s Day to wish for children's happiness. In modern Japan, temari are a symbol of both New Year and young femininity, and are a common motif on both children’s and young women’s kimono. For a more extensive history of temari I’d recommend the following article. https://japanobjects.com/features/temari

This instruction booklet will take you through creating a base mari, adding guidelines, and three different patterns to stitch. There are full colour photos off each stage and our usual detailed instructions so you can teach yourself this wonderful craft.
